At Harry Szmerling & Co we know how to handle criminal law cases.

If you are charged with a criminal offence you have a choice whether to plead guilty or not guilty. If you plead not guilty then generally this means that you deny committing the offence. If you have any doubt about what your plea should be you should seek professional legal advice.

If you intend to plead guilty, we understand that you cannot change the events that have led to your situation. What we will do is ensure that we thoroughly understand all the facets of your legal problem and consider all avenues and aspects in search of solutions.

People end up in the criminal justice system because a number of factors have collided at a certain time in their lives. These may be drug dependence, marital problems, child custody issues, alcohol, unemployment and associations with the wrong people: the list is almost infinite. Appearing in the criminal justice system is often a symptom of a much larger problem. We understand that, and we understand that these things cannot be fixed overnight.

If you want to defend your charges we are happy to represent you in the appropriate Court. We will give you advice on the best way to handle your case and advise you of any available legal defences available to you as well as making the most of any factual circumstances that work to your advantage.

If you decide to plead guilty, we can negotiate with the prosecutors about which charges you may plead guilty to, if that is appropriate in your case. We will listen to you about what was happening in your life that lead to you committing the offences. It is very rare that an offence is committed with no explanation and such an explanation if presented properly can make all the difference to the punishment the court imposes.
